Bangladesh Faces Rising Cancer Rates: 114 Cases Per 100,000 People

Alarming Cancer Rates in Bangladesh: 114 Cases Per 100,000 People Revealed in New Study

A new study reveals a concerning rise in cancer cases across Bangladesh, with approximately 114 individuals diagnosed per 100,000 population. The data reflects a growing public health challenge that requires immediate attention.

Key Findings

The survey covered over 116,000 people from 27,000 households in a rural upazila and recorded a total of 133 confirmed cancer cases. Alarmingly, men were found to have a higher incidence of cancer compared to women.

  • Common Cancers in Women:
Breast cancer was the most frequently diagnosed, followed by cervical, oral, thyroid, and uterine cancers.
  • Common Cancers in Men:
The most common cancers included laryngeal (voice box), stomach, lip, oral cavity, lung, and esophageal cancers.

Associated Health Conditions

Many cancer patients were also found to be suffering from additional chronic illnesses:

  • 28.6% had high blood pressure
  • 11.3% had diabetes
  • 8.3% had heart disease
  • 3% suffered from kidney disease
  • 3% had a history of stroke

Lifestyle and Risk Factors

Lifestyle habits continue to play a major role in the development of cancer:

  • 73% of male cancer patients were smokers
  • 41% of men and 61% of women used smokeless tobacco
  • 65% of men and 75% of women regularly chewed betel leaf with areca nut

These habits, commonly practiced across both rural and urban communities, are known to significantly increase the risk of developing cancer.

Treatment Access and Gaps

Despite the severity of the diagnoses, treatment access remains uneven:

  • 60% of patients received full treatment
  • 13% received only chemotherapy
  • 11.3% underwent surgery
  • 2.3% had only radiotherapy
  • 4.5% received no treatment at all

This highlights a serious gap in healthcare accessibility, especially in low-income and rural areas.

The Way Forward

The findings indicate a pressing need for comprehensive cancer awareness programs, early detection initiatives, and better access to affordable treatment. Expanding population-based cancer registries across the country will help monitor and manage the disease more effectively.

Bangladesh must invest in prevention, strengthen healthcare infrastructure, and prioritize cancer care in public health policy to address the growing burden of this life-threatening disease.
