No Need to Fear Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), Says IEDCR
Recently, there has been growing concern about Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), especially with reports of infections surfacing in neighboring countries. However, health experts in Bangladesh are reassuring the public that there is no reason to panic.
According to the Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR), HMPV is not a new virus in Bangladesh. It was first detected in the country in 2017 and has appeared sporadically since then, including two confirmed cases in early 2023.
Dr. Tahmina Shirin, Director of IEDCR, explained that the symptoms of HMPV—such as fever, cough, cold, nasal congestion, and body aches—are similar to those of other common respiratory viruses. While it can be more severe in young children, the elderly, and those with underlying health conditions like cancer, the virus typically does not pose a serious threat to the general population.
The public is advised to follow standard health practices to stay protected. These include wearing masks in crowded places, washing hands regularly, and avoiding close contact with sick individuals.
Although HMPV has been in the spotlight due to media coverage from abroad, experts urge people not to give in to fear or misinformation. It’s important to stay informed and take preventive measures, but there’s no need for alarm.
By practicing good hygiene and staying aware, everyone can do their part to reduce the spread of respiratory illnesses, including HMPV.
